The tornado was the 9th of 14 tornadoes produced by a supercell thunderstorm during the tornado outbreak. Nine mobile homes and a frame house were destroyed in Red River County. A third person was killed after she and her father were sucked out of their home; the father was found unharmed, however. (So not only is property worth more today, but there also is more of it.) In addition, for that case, the tornado hit a total of 5 counties. The maximum damage in Oklahoma and McClain Counties was rated F4 (which, of course, is still very devastating damage). An additional 5 tornadoes occurred in the NWS Tulsa forecast during the late evening hours of May 3rd and the early morning hours of May 4th, making the total of 63 tornadoes the largest outbreak of tornadoes for Oklahoma since official records began in 1950. If we adjust our damage figures from other violent tornadoes in the past to account for inflation, we find that several (Lubbock,TX - May 11, 1970; Omaha, NE - May 6, 1975; Wichita Falls, TX - April 10, 1979, to name a few) were very close to the May 3 tornado in terms of dollar amount of damage. Lesser damage occurred in Red River County where a few outbuildings were impacted. Another 6 tornadoes were rated F3 and 7 were rated F2, making a total of 13 strong tornadoes for this event. We do know that other tornadoes have been wider, many have been more deadly, some have been longer lived, and many have produced longer damage tracks. As an example of this problem, combined with another problem, the first entry, with $1,250,000,000 in 1973 dollars is the Conyers, GA tornado. The most notable of these was the F5 Bridge Creek–Moore tornado which devastated Oklahoma City and suburban communities. They are, essentially, only estimates. A total of 58 tornadoes occurred in the NWS Norman forecast area in central and southwestern Oklahoma during afternoon and evening hours of May 3, 1999. Special Weather Statements With a large, violent tornado on the ground heading into the most populous center in the state of Oklahoma, the forecast office staff wanted to convey the message that would grab people's attention and let them know that this event was something different than normal. An additional 5 tornadoes occurred in the NWS Tulsa forecast during the late evening hours of May 3rd and the early morning hours of May 4th, making the total of 63 tornadoes the largest outbreak of tornadoes for Oklahoma since official records began in 1950. This storm produced 14 tornadoes over a 3.5 hours time frame with 5 of them being either strong or violent (rated F2 or higher). Extensive tree damage occurred as well, as large trees, "with trunk diameters the size of a small car," were uprooted and tossed 200 yd (180 m). One home had most of its roof blown off and was shifted slightly off its foundation. After passing through the town, the storm moved over rural areas before dissipating. Reaching a maximum width of 0.5 mi (0.80 km), the F4 tornado caused immense damage across northern parts of Dover. This leaves only the F0 to F5 range as the actual tornado F scale. Even if the F-scale wind speed ranges were reliable estimates, the DOW measurement of 318 mph is still in the F5 range (261-318 mph) as defined by Dr. Fujita. Road Conditions Early results of this review process suggest that the maximum speed actually may be less than 318 mph (although it likely will remain above 300 mph). Short-lived tornado touched down over an open field and caused no damage. Wildfire Safety The May 3rd Tornado Outbreak is often the baseline when comparing other tornado outbreak events. Tornado touched down just outside El Reno and tracked generally northeast. Local, Current Conditions The May 3 tornado currently is the most expensive tornado ever recorded. Moving into Titus County, the tornado destroyed seven homes, two of which were swept off their foundation, and killed one person. There was a large amount of moisture over Oklahoma putting dewpoints in the low to mid-60s with temperatures in the mid to upper 60s. The rating of the tornadoes are as follows: As the day started, conditions were muggy and cloudy across most of Oklahoma. Here's a look at the damage: Oklahoma and Cleveland counties … A brief tornado touched down at the Darlington County Jetport, damaging a hangar. Numerous trees were also downed.
