“I would like to express my sincere thanks to my police family who have been so supportive.”Insp Ireland was driving a patrol car in Emerton just after midnight on Sunday when he saw a fight between two men, and jumped out of his car to intervene.It was there, in an allegedly drug-fuelled brawl, that a third man struck him on the head with a glass bottle — causing a deep cut to his head.The attack left him with a large gash to his head which required eight stitched.Officers of all ranks right up to the top of the force got in touch with Insp Ireland, including the NSW Police Commissioner Mick Fuller, who contacted him on the morning of the attack and expressed his thanks for Insp Ireland’s service.“Additionally, I have received messages from people I don’t even know, expressing their thanks for the service of police officers and their dismay at the behaviour of some in the community,” he said.“I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to everyone who has sent messages, phoned or visited.It has been a challenging incident to come to terms with for the officer who has been at the Mount Druitt Police Area Command since 2016.He said despite the challenging areas unique social make up, he was “extremely fond” of the area and the people.NSW Police Deputy Commissioner Jeff Loy this week condemned the attack.Mr Loy said it was “abhorrent” that police protecting the community were attacked in such a violent way.“My officers are good people who put themselves in harms way every day, keeping the community safe,” he said.“This incident highlights the risks and reality police face every day, however the support shown for all our police following the attack on Acting Inspector Matt Ireland has been appreciated.”A man who was arrested but released on the night of the incident as he stood near the scene of the incident shirtless and covered in blood, was taken into custody on Sunday afternoon.Thomas Magann, 26, was refused bail during his first mention at Mt Druitt Court on Monday.He is due to face court charged with concealing an serious indictable offence again on April 18.
