It is kind of painful to be away from everything that you've ever known. During a long and remarkable career, she not only brought African music to Western ears, but was also a vociferous opponent of South Africa’s apartheid regime. She performed her first concert in her homeland in 30 years in April 1991. The following year she gave the first of several addresses to the UN special committee on apartheid, and South Africa reciprocated by banning her records. Illegal brewing and consumption was common. Makeba was born in Johannesburg, South Africa on March 4, 1932. She was one of the most visible and outspoken opponents of South Africa's apartheid regime from the 1960s till its dismantling in the early 1990s. Her future husband Hugh Masekela receiving a trumpet from "Satchmo", the jazz legend better known as Louis Armstrong. Backstage at a show in San Francisco, a Kenyan student taught her a song that would become part of her standard repertoire. No matter where you go, there are times when people show you kindness and love, and there are times when they make you know that you are with them but not of them. She signed a recording contract with In 1964, Makeba released her second studio album for RCA Victor, Makeba's music was also popular in Europe, and she travelled and performed there frequently. I never knew they were going to stop me from coming back. Makeba and Hugh Masekela gave him full support, however, and welcomed the controversy because it brought important issues into general discussion and made cultural activity even more potent.To much of the world, Makeba had reached a level of statesmanship that verged on saintliness. She was the only child of singer Miriam Makeba with her first husband, James Kubay. Makeba's career flourished in the United States, and she released several albums and songs, her most popular being "Makeba was among the first African musicians to receive worldwide recognition. Later the family moved north to Transvaal, where Caswell worked as a clerk for Shell.

But she had already noticed that "music was a type of magic" that could elevate her from the poverty which surrounded her. Her mother was a spiritual healer who also took jobs as a housemaid.

Following Nelson Mandela's release from prison, Makeba returned to South Africa in December 1990.
