The farm has been in Tom Ray’s family for four decades, but he and his horse-riding wife Gaby recently transformed the land into a stables and livery before opening up a tree-ringed meadow for campers. This campsite offers a unique place to camp on Brownsea Island Nature Reserve. Buzzards slow-ride overhead; dragonflies flit like hummingbirds, children with sea-tousled hair roam freely through the cow parsley. The pop-up Cloud Nine aims at creating an experience somewhere in the two – the team are behind The Big Feastival and Winter Wonderland, and many of the on-the-ground crew are seasoned festival pros – and pitched up in August on the Earl of Shaftesbury's Dorset estate for a month-long residency of bell tents and family-friendly activities. Highertown Farm is in an enviable location less than a mile from Lansallos Cove and a short drive from the charming coastal villages of Fowey and Looe. West Virginia has some amazing campgrounds! While you're there, visit the Dolaucothi Gold Mines which are a short walk away. There's even a National Trust pub, the Sticklebarn, just down the road from the campsite.With towering mountains and an awe-inspiring lake, this remote valley is an adventurer’s paradise. On the western shoreline of Lake Windemere and surrounded by craggy mountain peaks, it’s not hard to see why Low Wray is one of our best UK campsites. There are haystack sofas to collapse into, a fairy garden and woven-willow snail for young children, while the village itself is just a mile away, with a classic green with live music in the summer, three pubs and three tearooms; the friendly owner of nearby Boydells Farm hosts walks and talks for families.There are just 10 pitches, with no more than eight people on each, so it never gets too busy.
It gets busy during summer, so may be better for a spare weekend in late summer. With cascading waterfalls, wooded valleys and quaint towns all nearby, you’ll be spoilt for choice for places to explore. Take Finchingfield, to the north, for example, which is where Julia Dimmock and her husband decamped to after an urban career in events a couple of years ago to grow lavender – rows and rows of it, smudges of hazy purple against yellow corn fields. Instead, swap the sleeping bags for hand-carved wooden beds with proper mattresses and Egyptian cotton bedding, and add a wood-burning stove to keep you cosy, no matter the weather. Home-made dishes can be delivered, while the farm shop has Exmoor gin, farm jams and chutneys and, apparently, some very good cider from an orchard in Crediton. There are two green-painted, boutique-style shepherd’s huts sleeping two, and nine pitches for tents and campervans – no children allowed – near a willow-fringed pond that can be fished or simply rowed across. A 10-minute walk from Newquay, it has 12 tents set up on a beach surrounded by chalky cliffs, just steps from the lapping Atlantic. Wake up to spectacular sunrises and the fresh, salty sea air when you stay at Gupton Farm on the Pembrokeshire coast.
